Guatemala 2008

February 12 and 19, 2008.
Our week traveling throughout Guatemala started out in the beautiful colonial town of Antigua, wandering the cobblestone streets in awe of the ruins of once beautiful buildings that had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1778. It was fascinating to imagine what they must have looked like in their full glory.
Then we switched gears and flew to Flores for our visit to Tikal National Park. There we saw amazing Mayan ruins and the pristine temples nestled in the jungle.
Then it was on to Lake Atitlan and it's stunning setting amongst three huge volcanoes. We spent a couple of days exploring a few of the tiny villages around the lake.
We got in a little adventure with some really fun zip-lining and we got to see some wildlife, such as howler and spider monkeys and pizotes and toucans.
Guatemala is an amazing destination, not only for its history and beauty, but for its warm, friendly people.
Hopefully you'll see some of the beauty and warmness I tried to capture in these photos!
Enjoy!

Tikal is the largest of the ancient ruined cities of the Maya civilization. It was discovered in 1848.
Though monumental architecture at the site dates to the 4th century BC, Tikal reached its height during the Classic Period, ca. 200 AD to 900 AD.
This area is called the Gran Plaza.
Temple I (also known as the Temple of the Great Jaguar) was built around 695AD
